A second ‘no cold calling zone’ for Wharfedale could keep conmen away, but is not intended to target reputable tradesmen, say police.

Wharfedale and Craven Neighbour-hood Policing Team (NPT) officers say they have been delighted with the response from Burley-in-Wharfedale residents to the new cold calling no-go area.

The NPT says the scheme is intended to put off opportunist criminals and thieves, but should not hit the business of reputable salesmen.

It will protect around 350 homes and follows the success of a similar scheme launched in areas of Ilkley last year.

The latest initiative has been jointly funded by Burley Parish Council, Bradford Council’s Shipley Area Office as well as from cash seized from criminals under the Proceeds of Crime Act.

It is being publicised through signs and stickers displayed in streets and participating homes warning that residents do not want to be contacted on their doorsteps by those trying to sell unsolicited goods and services.

Insp Sue Sanderson, of the Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “We have found these zones really do provide some comfort and support to our more vulnerable residents and make a positive impact in the communities in which they operate.”
