The NHS in Bradford has teamed up with the private sector to run healthy living sessions in the workplace.

Coral Windows is the first company to sign up to the programme being run by health promotion workers from Bradford and Airedale Primary Care Trust.

Workers have been advised how to look after their own health and encouraged to make lifestyle changes if necessary.

The initiative has been developed by the Working in Partnership Programme and is part of a national pilot project. The district is one of only three places in the country currently taking part.

Darren De Souza, senior health promotion specialist, said: "These courses provide workers with the chance to take some time out of their busy lives to look after their own health needs. It may be that we are not telling them something they didn't already know, but we are just bringing it to the forefront of their minds and giving them the support and confidence they need to put it into action.

"This is a great way for companies to invest in their staff, as I'm sure a healthier workforce is happier, more motivated and ultimately more productive.

We have really enjoyed running the course and hope that the participants will be able to improve aspects of their lives that they have identified and that they will have greater knowledge about where they can go in the local area for health support."

The course is provided free of charge and takes place during the working day. It lasts nine hours in total and covers confidence building, dealing with stress and anxiety, tips on healthy eating, exercise and where they can get help.

Workers can receive support on issues ranging from anger management, giving up smoking, controlling their diet, coping with stressful jobs and mental health issues.

David Waddington, business manager for Coral Windows on Halifax Road, said: "The health and well-being of our staff is always a priority for us, so when the opportunity came along to be involved in this course we immediately said yes.

"The staff involved have all found the course beneficial and are now much more able to take control of their own health needs.

"They also have a better understanding of what help is available from the NHS and other providers in the Bradford area."

Any companies who would like a public health worker to visit them to run a self- health course should contact Mr De Souza on (01274) 223930.
