A friendship group launched by Bradford Theatres for people who don’t want to sit in the audience on their own has been hailed a success – and now organisers are appealing for more men to join.

The Companions Club was set up for people who visit the theatre alone. When members arrive at the Alhambra for a show or concert they are greeted by staff who match them up with other members, so they can sit together. In the interval the club holds a get-together over drinks.

“It’s for anyone who doesn’t want to sit by themselves to watch a show,” said Bradford Theatres general manager Adam Renton.

“There can be various reasons why people come on their own – they may be single, widowed, divorced or have a partner who doesn’t like going to the theatre. For some women it’s a case of their husband preferring to watch football, so they end up missing out on live theatre. Many people are happy to sit in an audience alone but others don’t feel confident enough and prefer companionship.

“The club is free to join and once members are registered they’re matched up with others.”

The Companions Club is based at the Alhambra and there are plans to expand it to St George’s Hall.

“In a short space of time it’s become a success – people are making friends and swapping phone numbers,” said Mr Renton.

The Bradford Theatres Access Group has introduced a range of services for people with disabilities, including sign language performances and touch tours.

Audio brochures are available for blind and partially sighted people, and prior to a performance they are invited onto the stage to touch the set, props and cast.
