TI – No Mercy (Atlantic Records) *****

Following the impressive Paper Trail, rapper TI has released his seventh album and it does not disappoint. With collaborations with some of the most successful artists around, the album is consistently enjoyable. Be it the smash-hit Get Back Up, featuring Chris Brown, the powerful That’s All She Wrote, featuring Eminem, or the endlessly listenable Castle Walls, featuring Christina Aguilera, to choose but three standout tracks from an album that includes other such acts as Kanye West, Kid Cudi, Drake, The-Dream and Pharrell. A brilliant effort that proves that despite private setbacks, TI is an artist to be reckoned with.

Bruno Mars – Doo-Wops and Hooligans (Atlantic Records) ***

You cannot possibly have turned the radio on recently without hearing a Bruno Mars song. The singles Just The Way You Are and Grenade have both rocketed to No 1, as has this album. The album starts with the two big hits, which are both well-put-together, old-fashioned love songs with a modern slant. After that, there is a good mix of catchy pop songs to keep you singing along. I like the way Bruno Mars writes his songs. I think it’s quite refreshing – they are not all about boobs and bums and what he is going to do to his latest love. Obviously other people agree with me, since his sales figures are already well over the million-pound mark. It is not generally the kind of music that I would listen to, but all the same, I really can’t fault him!

Pete Yorn – Pete Yorn (Vagrant Records) **

Pete Yorn’s self-titled album is a mix of country and rock, with a Gram Parsons cover thrown into the mix. Yorn definitely has a lot of connections in the biz, which I feel is reflected in this album, giving him the chance to leave a personal stamp on his music, rather than go for commercial gain. Not one of the greatest voices, but interesting.
