A truck ended up in a field and a female driver from Bradford was seriously hurt after a crash on the Drighlington bypass today.

Police closed the A650 about quarter of a mile before the turnoff to Birstall after the incident near The Old Brickworks in the early hours.

Firefighters from Cleckheaton, Batley and Morley took about one hour to free the two casualties from both the lorry and the Mazda car.

Police are now investigating the circumstances of the collision, which occurred just after midnight.

Rescuers managed to free the light goods truck driver first from his vehicle, which had gone off the road through a fence and into a field. He was in shock but not seriously hurt.

But it took about 40 minutes using specialist hydraulic and spreading gear to release the Mazda’s driver, a woman aged 28 from Bradford.

She was taken to Leeds General Infirmary with serious injuries which were not believed to be life threatening.

The road was re-opened at 6.40am.
