Members of a Bradford bowls club claim its future is at risk after taxpayers’ money was spent on a civic reception for an international cricket team.
Players at the Lister Park Bowls Club say they had asked Bradford Council for money to build a security fence around the club, but have been refused on the grounds it could cost £50,000.
But the members say they believe the Council spent about £50,000 on a civic reception for the Pakistan cricket team at nearby Cartwright Hall on top of the £50,000 “gambled” by the authority on a match between the Pakistanis and Australia at Headingley in Leeds.
Now Bill Hutchinson, the former club secretary of the bowls club, says the extra £50,000 could have been spent on safeguarding its future rather than the civic reception.
He believes £40,000 was spent on the event with an extra £8,000 on security staff.
