A rising number of people in Yorkshire are applying for places at universities before tuition fees go up to a maximum of £9,000 a year.

The University of Bradford has received 18 per cent more applications for courses than this time last year.

Regionally, applications are up by 4.3 per cent.

Higher tuition fees will be introduced for students starting university in 2012 and more students appear to be trying to start their studies this autumn to ensure they are unaffected.

Almost 40,000 people in Yorkshire are vying for university places.

At Bradford University, applications are up on the 12,042 received last year. That number was a 21 per cent rise on the year before.

The University said applications for undergraduate places from home students had increased by 21 per cent and from international applicants by 36 per cent.
