I wonder what Tim Bresnan’s biggest fan thought of his Ashes-clinching wicket?

The moment I heard that Yorkshire’s finest had taken the decisive scalp – I was too much of a wimp to stay up and watch it live – my mind went back to a Twenty20 game at a freezing Headingley the season before last.

Notts were the opponents and Adam Voges, a little known Australian, was smiting Bresnan’s four overs to all corners of Leeds.

The May temperature was barely hovering around single figures and a timid-looking lady, in her mid to late 60s, was huddled in a shawl in the row in front.

How deceptive appearances can be.

After Voges had hoiked the third, or it might have been fourth, maximum off poor Bresnan, the little old dear suddenly threw off the covers and tottered to her feet.

“Oi Bresnan,” she bawled, “why don’t tha bog (that’s not the exact word she used) off back to England? We don’t want thee here.”

Well I, for one, am glad he did take those words to heart. He did bog off with England Down Under – and will come back home a hero.

Bresnan was hardly top of the list with the selectors. It took him four Tests to finally get a game.

But it was worth every minute of that wait as he delivered a superb first-innings blitz to destroy the Aussie middle order – and then popped up with the one that the highlights reels will show again and again.

Bresnan is not one of the big egos in the team but he should bask in his piece of history.

And I’m sure there’s one Headingley punter who can’t wait to share his success.
