Residents are hoping for a reduction in road accidents after winning a battle to impose a lower speed limit on a section of moorland road.

Signs for 30mph have been put up on a bend on Hangingstone Road, Ilkley, in response to demands from homeowners such as Alex and Lisa Walker.

The couple have been calling for safety measures after witnessing numerous crashes outside their home.

Two cars have smashed into their garden and one car has careered through a dry stone wall.

Earlier this year Bradford Council painted white lines and installed cat’s eyes on the bend near the Cow and Calf Hotel, which had a 50mph limit, but campaigners continued their call for lower speeds.

Mrs Walker said the motorists had been very lucky not to have been seriously hurt. She said: “It’s taken a lot of time and effort on our behalf but I am pleased we didn’t give up at the beginning. Hopefully motorists will take note.”

The campaign was supported by Keighley MP Kris Hopkins who said he was delighted the hard work of campaigners had paid off.

“I’m glad the Council has seen sense. We have been pushing for this for a while,” he said.

“There are still things to do on road safety, particularly on the stretch of that road down to the school.”

Keith Escritt, Bradford Council’s principal highway engineer, said: “The 30mph advisory speed limit sign has been erected to warn motorists that there is a hazard and they should slow down.”
