Sexual health experts in Bradford have started a campaign to encourage the district’s under-18s to stay safe during the Christmas and New Year party season.

National figures published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show a staggering 20 per cent increase in conception rates during December and January when compared to February – which has the lowest rates of conception.

Dr Anne Connolly, lead GP for sexual health in Bradford and Airedale, said: “It’s important that young people are aware of the risks that come with unprotected sex.

“During the Christmas season people tend to have a few more drinks than usual, which can lead to more risks sexually.

“The messages are there to remind young people to be safe and make the right decisions when it comes to their sexual health during this holiday period.”

Bradford and Airedale’s new sexual health website – bash.nhs.uk – is publicising online sexual health messages and tips all week to help advise people to look after their sexual health this Christmas and use the one-stop-online-shop that offers:

  • Confidential advice on safer sex, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), STI testing, contraception and abortion services.
  • Information on specialist lesbian and gay services
  • Free condoms and chlamydia home- testing kits.

‘What you don’t want for Christmas’ sexual health messages are being sent out daily via social networking sites Facebook and Twitter, helping to engage with young people and provide them with safe-sex information.

Advice includes don’t put yourself at risk by drinking too much alcohol and if you do have sex make sure you use a condom.
