A Bradford Indian restaurant is playing a leading role in introducing the city to millions of American television viewers.

Family-run vegetarian restaurant Prashad was runner-up in Channel 4 series Ramsay’s Best Restaurants, which is now being broadcast in America.

The programme featuring Prashad was aired this week on BBC America, available on digital cable and satellite TV in more than 68 million homes.

More than 12,000 restaurants were initially nominated for the programme, which saw Gordon Ramsay travel the UK searching for exceptional restaurants.

The chef and his team ploughed through thousands of nominations from the public to choose a selection of restaurants in various categories.

Prashad, in Horton Grange Road, Bradford, beat top London restaurant The Brilliant in the Indian category, which attracted more than 2,000 nominations.

Viewers heard Gordon tell the team at Prashad “You’ve raised the bar in this competition” and describe the food as the best vegetarian cuisine he had ever had.

Following broadcast of the series in the UK, Prashad has more than doubled its workforce to cope with growing demand, has expanded from 22 to 40 covers, and seen demand for bookings go through the roof. Owner Bobby Patel said: “To think that millions of viewers in America will now be able to watch the programme is fantastic.

“It’s great news for our restaurant but also very important for raising the profile of the Bradford and the wider Yorkshire region.”

The business was established in 1992 by Mohan and Kaushy Patel. It has developed into an award-winning restaurant offering traditional Gujarati and Punjabi cuisine, with Mohan and Kaushy working with oldest son Bobby and his wife Minal.
