A petition calling on the Government to stump up the cash to put a halt to congestion problems at the controversial Saltaire roundabout has been handed over in the House of Commons.

Mother-of-three Rachel Adamson collected 400 signatures from people in the Saltaire area who are frantic about hold-ups and dangers at the roundabout near The Rosse pub in the village.

They claim traffic there and on neighbouring roads has got worse since the £47.4 million Bingley Relief Road opened three years ago.

Last night Shipley MP Philip Davies presented the petition in the chamber after he told MPs about the "concerning" problem and called on the Government to provide funding to the Highways Agency to deal with it. He told the House: "The number of signatures is just the tip of the iceberg.

"It is extremely important the Govern-ment realise how much public concern there is and I believe the support shows the strength of local feeling. Rachel has been pro-active with the campaign and I congratulate her. I hope the Government will step in and do something."

The petition will now be handed to Transport secretary Douglas Alexander who will write to Mr Davies setting out if the Government have any plans to intervene or provide funding.

Last week during Transport Questions in the Commons Mr Alexander said he would he in a position to talk about funding in the autumn. The fresh plea comes after demands for the report into the problem to be published immediately.

The controversial road is at the centre of an on-going dispute between the Highways Agency and Bradford Council struggling to agree on who should pay for any work to ease congestion hot-spots.

A study into the area's problems has now been completed by Highways Agency officials and Council chiefs.

But the report will not be made public until September when a solution package goes before the Council's Executive Committee.

The Telegraph & Argus applied to the authorities under the Freedom of Information Act, requesting findings be disclosed but were told the council and Highways Agency still needed to carry out discussions "in confidence" and therefore details would not be released.
