A banned drink driver, who has a wooden leg, was twice caught twice behind the wheel – the second time on the day he was expected in court to face the first offence.

Scott Robinson was spotted by police driving his adapted Motability car in Northdale Road, Frizinghall, Bradford, on September 7, the day he was due to appear before magistrates in Bingley for driving while banned on August 27.

The 28-year-old had originally been disqualified for drink driving in July, magistrates in Bingley were told yesterday.

Robinson, of Airedale Avenue, Frizinghall, pleaded guilty to two counts of driving while disqualified, failing to stop for a police officer, and two offences of driving without insurance.

He admitted the offences when he appeared in court on September 7 when he revealed he had driven that morning.

He returned to court yesterday for sentence and was told by magistrates: “We can’t believe you drove on the day you were due up in court for driving while banned.

“That’s definitely worthy of a custodial sentence and we intend to sentence you to four months in prison suspended for 12 months.”

Magistrates also imposed a fresh 12 months’ ban back-dated to September 7 under the totting up procedure and also ordered him to pay £85 court costs.

Mark Steeples, prosecuting, said Robinson was banned for drink driving on July 7 and then was seen driving a friend’s car by police officers in Aireville Avenue and Aireville Crescent on August 27.

He was bailed to appear at court on September 7 but that morning was stopped by officers again in Aireville Road. Despite operating their flashing lights and siren, he did not stop for some distance.

Glen Chivers, mitigating for Robinson, said he had driven to counter his disability and was now was well aware of the severity of his situation.

He was originally from South Africa where he had faced a “torrid” time and had come to the UK, said Mr Chivers.
