Bradford Council has increased its stocks of grit by more than 70 per cent in response to last winter’s harsh weather.

According to the authority’s Winter Preparedness report, which was presented to members of the Regeneration and Economy Scrutiny Committee last night, stock levels now stand at 26,000 tonnes, up from 15,000 tonnes at the start of last winter.

Principal engineer Keith Escritt said that while the district was well stocked, supplies across the country were limited and so chances of gaining more salt were uncertain.

He highlighted issues with meeting demand for grit bins, saying 30 per cent did not fulfil criteria needed for their installation.

The committee recommended the Council improve its winter service website and work more closely with the media to keep the public informed of gritting progress.

The report stated the authority routinely treated 70 per cent of its road network, more than double amount recommended by the Audit Commission.
