A mum and daughter mixed with celebrities as special guests at a TV awards ceremony.

Hazel Abbott, from Cullingworth, even received her own award after being voted Britain’s No 1 soap fan by TV Choice magazine. She gained the prize after revealing daughter Sophie had been named after a character in the Australian soap Home And Away.

Hazel, 45, and Sophie, 17, were guests of the awards night’s sponsors, soap powder company Daz, at the Dorchester in London.

Hazel loves to settle down in front of the soaps after her teatime early evening stint at the Cullingworth chippie she runs with husband, Nick.

She said: “To win the competition I had to answer various questions on different soaps and say if a soap had made any difference to my life.

“I told them I had named Sophie after a character in Home And Away. When she was born she used to get excited when the music came on.

“They were really pleased when Sophie went to the awards with me.

“We had a fabulous night meeting all the stars including William Roache, all the Loose Women and TV chef Gino D’Acampo.”

Hazel and Sophie, a sixth-former at Parkside School, Cullingworth, were treated to a meal and a night at the top hotel in Park Lane.

Hazel was impressed with how pleasant most of the celebrities were as she walked around getting photographed with them. She said: “Sophie was a bit ‘ohmigod’. It was surreal – I was looking around thinking I couldn’t be there.”
