Two top figure skaters from Bradford have been selected to join a national squad.

The National Ice Skating Association (NISA) has chosen just 28 skaters from across the country to join its 2010/11 Performance Team.

Bradford’s British Champion skaters Daniel King and Harry Mattick, who train at the city’s ice arena, have been selected for the men’s discipline.

Harry, 16, of Wibsey, won junior gold at the 2009 British Ice Figure Skating Championships, and Daniel, 19, has been a member of the GB squad since March 2004.

Keith Horton, chief executive of NISA, the national governing body responsible for the development of the sport in Great Britain and Northern Ireland, said: “GB skating continues to go from strength to strength.

“The size of this Performance Team reflects the wealth of figure skating talent available to the selectors.

“With an average age of just 20, it also highlights the new generation of skaters coming through the ranks as we start planning for 2014 (when the World Figure Skating Championships are held).

“It is exciting times for the sport as we rebuild our presence alongside the world’s best. Congratulations to all in the squad NISA’s next important event is the UK leg of the ISU Junior Grand Prix series, which is taking place at iceSheffield from Wednesday, September 29, to Sunday, October 3.

Tickets are on sale, priced £10 for adults and £5 for children for competition days. The official practice day, Wednesday, September 29, is free. For more information, visit igp2010.co.uk.
