Bradford Interchange Railway Station has won a blooming marvellous gold award in this year’s Yorkshire In Bloom awards.

Northern Rail was awarded the prize at yesterday’s annual Yorkshire In Bloom awards ceremony, which this year was held in Leeds.

It won gold in the public, private and charitable establishment category of the annual awards.

Ilkley was also judged to be blooming marvellous as it came out winner of the town category in this year’s Yorkshire In Bloom awards.

A total of 11 gold, 46 silver gilt, 30 silver and two bronze awards were given out at the ceremony at the Royal Armouries.

There was also many special and discretionary awards for businesses hotels, pubs and visitor attractions, as well as young people’s awards.

Villages, towns and organisations from across the Bradford district were represented in the awards.

Councillor James McKenna, the Lord Mayor of Leeds, welcomed the guests to the awards ceremony.

More than 250 entrants participated in the 2010 Yorkshire In Bloom campaign, including 36 schools, three universities and one college.

Judging criteria for the competition was based on horticultural achievement, environmental responsibility and community participation.

After picking up a gold award in the spring judging earlier in the year, Ilkley residents have stepped up and gave judges little choice but to award first prize after a strong community effort.

One of the organisers behind the Ilkley entry called the success a “wonderful day” for the town.

And Kate Brown, secretary of the Ilkley In Bloom committee, said the victory was down to the efforts of everybody in the town.

“We certainly are delighted,” she said. “It makes the hard work everyone puts in all worthwhile.

“Thanks to the committee, the businesses who keep their premises in good order, the schools and everyone who keeps the place looking attractive. It’s a wonderful day for Ilkley.”

The results of the national Britain In Bloom campaign will be announced on September 29.
