Catherine Stewart e-mails: I am trying to find Mr Andrew Paterson, and/or his family.

Mr Paterson was born on 27th July 1920, at 15 Wood Road, Frizinghall, Manningham, Bradford. He will have celebrated his 90th birthday about six weeks ago this year.

His parents were John Robb Paterson (jnr), a factory worker and Hannah nee Holroyd. He was named Andrew after his uncle, his father's brother Andrew Whyte Paterson (1893-1916) who had been killed in World War I.

His father was a Scot from a line of Merchant Seaman, but John R Paterson's own father broke the mould (no pun intended) by becoming a Fifeshire Master Baker.

John Jnr in turn felt naval life was not for him and moved down to England for employment, where he met Hannah Holroyd.

Andrew had an older brother, John (born 9th Jan 1909 at 13 Crowther Court) and an older sister, Eliza Paterson (born 7th April 1910 at 74 Fitzgerald Street, Horton, Bradford, died 1978, USA), later Mrs Charles Boyer.

Andrew's father John Robb Paterson was one of 10 children, and he was the second eldest of these. William (1887-1943), remained in Scotland and also had a daughter named Eliza Paterson; Isabella (later Mrs Fleming) also remained in Scotland, dying in Anstruther (1892-1987).

Agnes Robb Paterson (1895-1980) was my own great-grandmother, and it may have been because of John her brother that my great-grandmother and her husband moved down into England - this is not certain, as they moved further south to South Yorkshire and then North West Notts and then North Derbyshire.

Andrew was killed in World War I, Frederick Whyte Paterson (1906-1943) was killed in World War II and Margaret (Mrs McLelland) died in Scotland.

However, three of John Robb Paterson's brothers I can't trace, and I have wondered if they moved down to Bradford near John and his family?

They would be Andrew Paterson's uncles, and their children his cousins. Thomas Anderson Paterson was born in 1897 and Christopher Whyte Paterson was born in 1900, both in Lochgelly, Fife, and Timothy was born in 1904.
