Railway police are reviewing CCTV footage after violence erupted between rival football supporters following Bradford City’s away clash at Stockport.

Two gangs of opposing supporters gathered on Stockport railway station platform and goaded each other following City’s 1-1 away stalemate on Saturday.

Punches were thrown as thugs from the two League Two clubs squared up to each other, eyewitnesses said.

Transport police were called to quell the ugly scenes on platforms three and four of the station at 6.11pm.

A British Transport Police spokesman said that if any Bradford City supporters were found guilty of football-related violence, they would face stiff penalties.

The maximum length of a Football Banning Order is five years.

The spokesman said: “Football-related disorder will not be tolerated on the rail network and we will push for the strongest penalties for those who engage in it.”

Witnesses reported between 15 and 20 youths hurling abuse at each other on the train station platforms.

Two or three of the youths are then believed to have exchanged blows, the BTP spokesman said.

Bradford City’s operations director David Baldwin said he had not been made aware of the incident, but condemned any violence between fans.

He said: “We don’t in any way condone any kind of thuggish behaviour by supposed football supporters, although I would question whether they are football supporters.”

There were also unconfirmed reports that a coach carrying Bradford City fans had its windows smashed.

The British Transport Police spokesman added: “Officers are currently making local enquiries, and viewing CCTV from the surrounding area in order to build a complete picture of what happened that evening.

“We are appealing for any witnesses to get in contact with us.”

Last month, the Telegraph & Argus reported that police secured a five-year banning order on Callum Ellis, 19, of Tarnhill Mews, West Bowling, Bradford.

He was given the order for his part in a number of incidents.
