Oyez, Oyez, Oyez! Now hear this – someone with a “theatrical” personality and a strong voice is being sought to become Otley’s deputy bellman.

Former bellman Bomber Wilson, of Weeton, has had to step down from the role for personal reasons so Otley Town Council is seeking a replacement.

Town clerk Iain Plumtree said: “It takes a special kind of person to do the job which is certainly what we had with Bomber, and we are deeply sorry he’s been forced to retire and would like to thank him for his excellent contribution to the town.

“We need a theatrical, really outgoing person who is prepared to walk out onto the street in strange clothes and make a real racket.

“They would also have to either know, or be prepared to learn, about protocol for the formal meetings they would attend, where officially they’re acting as the town mayor’s ‘bodyguard’.

“And of course they would need to be able to attend our important annual and civic events, including Otley Carnival and the council’s AGM. And eventually we would expect them to go the national crying competitions where they have to demonstrate their shouting prowess.

“I would love to hear from anyone interested in taking on the role. They’ll get a lot of support to begin with and our bellman, Paddy Steval, will also help as much as he can.”

The role of deputy bellman – which is equivalent to a town crier – is an honorary position, although it attracts a small annual fee and the council helps provide the traditional uniform.
