A restaurant is offering customers ‘the world’s hottest curry’ to raise awareness of fire safety in the home.

Customers at Saffron Desi in Leeds Road, Bradford, will be challenged to ‘put the fire out’ by trying a sizzling curry containing six types of chilli.

The restaurant decided to start the Hot Wednesdays scheme after one of its employees was injured during a fatal house fire in Hendford Drive, Pollard Park in July. Two children and their mother tragically died.

Customers who finish the dish will be allowed to eat for free and will receive a certificate and goody bag.

But those that fail will be given an information pack containing fire safety tips for the home.

Eddie Ball, of Bradford fire station, who visited the restaurant with firefighters for the start of the scheme, said: “I’m happy to use any vehicle I can to get a fire safety message out to the community. At the moment it’s the perfect time to push the message of safe cooking as during Ramadan many people are cooking a lot later at night.”

Saffron Desi manager Bilal Khan said: “We wanted to do something to create more awareness of fire safety. It’s a serious issue but we thought the best way to do this would be to do something fun.”

l Asjid Mahmood, 21, of Pollard Lane, Undercliffe, Bradford, has been charged with the murders of Iram Shah, 32 and her children Alina Shah, ten and Aman Shah, eight, who all died from injuries they suffered in the fire at their house in Hendford Drive. He is due to stand trial at Bradford Crown Court early next year.
