A man hit his friend on the head with a lump hammer during a row over his girlfriend’s underwear, a Court heard.

Richard Lee said: “I’m sorry, mate” after Mustafa Ali suffered multiple facial fractures, bruising and lacerations.

He was left lying on the floor, bleeding from the mouth and making gurgling noises, Bradford Crown Court heard yesterday.

Lee, 24, and Mr Ali lived a few doors apart on Mark Street, in West Bowling, Bradford.

The court heard Lee was lending help to Mr Ali on September 24 last year after he was butted in a dispute with another man over a mountain bike. The friends bought two bottles of cider and went to Lee’s home.

Prosecutor Stephen Uttley said they were laughing.

But a row broke out when Mr Ali made a reference to Lee’s girlfriend’s underwear, the court heard.

Mr Ali told police the last he could remember was Lee grabbing the hammer.

Lee told officers Mr Ali was “getting in my face”.

Lee said he was sober when he struck Mr Ali one blow with the hammer in self- defence.

Solicitor advocate Mark Brookes said in mitigation it was a spontaneous assault.

Lee, who pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding, was jailed for 12 months.
