A former international rugby player gave awards to pupils at their annual presentation evening.

Doddie Weir, who played for Scotland and was Barbarians captain, was invited to Thornton Grammar School, from where one of his relatives, head teacher John Weir, retires this term.

Dozens of students received awards recognising contributions to school life and individual achievements.

Several awards in sport and music are named in honour of brother and sister Craig and Ashley Stockman, who lost their lives in the Bradford City fire.

Rosemary Calvert, 17, won Sports Girl of the Year and the Ashley Stockman Award for Girls’ Sport for her commitment to sport and for mentoring peers.

Former pupil Emma Rankin, 19, now at Loughborough University, won the Craig Stockman Trophy for Soccer, having played football in every year group before turning out for Blackburn Rovers Ladies.

Benjamin Daniels, 17, won Sports Boy of the Year. The Campion FC Under-18s goalkeeper is also a member of Thornton Cricket Club’s second team.

The Ashley and Craig Stockman Trophy for Music went to singer and guitarist Isabella Gaffney, 16.
