A Bradford school pupil has been chosen as the top learner from across every secondary school in West Yorkshire in an annual awards scheme.

Ifedamola Adisa, 16, who attends Grange Technology College, has won the 2010 Aimhigher West Yorkshire Year Nine to 11 Learner of the Year award.

Schools across the county were invited to nominate their most outstanding students for awards which have been presented to winners at a ceremony hosted by Huddersfield University.

Jonathan Higgins, director of Aimhigher West Yorkshire, said: “Ife, as he likes to be known, is very lively and full of energy – which can sometimes be a challenge for his teachers – but the commitment he gives in his own time to his education and future success is very impressive.

“He rarely misses a session of the Junior Windsor Fellowship and has recently won a place on the Reaching for A*’s programme.”

Ife said: “I was so overwhelmed when I heard my name called out and realised that I had won the Aimhigher West Yorkshire award as well as Bradford Student of the Year. I am so happy and so proud.

“I really want to go to university because Aimhigher has helped me to understand what higher education is all about. I am going to be a pilot and have a great life.”

He shared the Bradford Student of the Year title with Yorkshire Martyrs Catholic College pupil Rimante Rakstyte.

The 17-year-old aspiring lawyer will be the first member of her family to study for a degree. She said: “It is so good to be recognised with this award, I feel incredible. I couldn’t speak English when I came to the UK in 2006 but I learned the language and will most definitely be going to university.”

Former Tong High School pupil and Bradford University psychology student, Matthew Midgeley, 19, won the Bradford Associate of the Year award in recognition for mentoring four Year Nine students as part of the Aimhigher Associates programme.

Other Bradford winners included the Tomorrow’s Health Professionals Today scheme which won the Bradford Programme of the Year, Dawn Metcalfe of Carlton Bolling College who won Bradford Aimhigher Organiser of the Year and Belle Vue Girls’ School, awarded Bradford School/College Partner of the Year.

Claire Young, a finalist in BBC television show The Apprentice, helped present the awards.
