This teenage canoeist is celebrating after receiving extra funding to help him foster his talent.

Richard Booth, 15, of Bingley, competes in canoe slalom, and is currently in the top five in the country in his age group.

The funding by Bradford Council and the SportsAid charity will go towards elite level sports science services which will help the youngster be a better athlete.

Last month he attended an induction day where he learned about strength and conditioning, sports psychology and nutrition.

He is also due to be assessed so he can receive tailored advice.

SportsAid regional development manager Rob Clarke said: “Richard is a talented young guy with a great deal of potential and a really positive attitude.

“By working with Bradford Council, not only are we helping Richard financially, but he is now part of our athlete services programme at Leeds Metropolitan Univer-sity. We hope this additional support will help give Richard that additional boost on his journey.”

Jane Glaister, the Council’s strategic director for culture, tourism and sport, said: “Richard first got into kayaking after seeing some people kayaking on the river near to where he lived.

“He became enthusiastic and now trains at least three times a week, travelling to different rivers most weekends to get experience.”
