As we continue to lick our wounds following England’s crushing defeat in the World Cup, news arrives of a drama about the Beautiful Game.
In September, Northern Broadsides Theatre Company takes on Harold Brighouse’s play about love, honour, class – and football: The Game.
It’s match day, 1913. Cash-strapped Blackton Rovers have sold their star striker Jack Metherall to a rival club on the eve of a game that could see the lads relegated to Division Two.
But Rovers’ crafty owner Austin Whitworth has a plan. He asks Jack to throw the match. Will he or won’t he?
* The Game is on at Halifax’s Viaduct Theatre from September 16 to 18 and October 20 to 23. For tickets, ring (01422) 255266.
