Forget Whitby. Vampire classic Dracula is being brought to life here in Bradford.

Carl Murray, deputy headteacher at Reevy Hill Primary School, and Bradford actor Lee Petcher are attempting to resurrect Bram Stoker’s masterpiece by staging a theatrical version.

The production will be performed by Stagecraft School of Drama this winter.

“Why Dracula and why Bradford? With TV shows and films such as Twilight, Buffy The Vampire Slayer and True Blood, interest in vampires has never been higher,” says Carl. “Dracula, the most well-known vampire story, being studied as part of the schools GCSE syllabus, seemed the obvious choice.”

Co-directors Carl and Lee are looking at gothic-inspired buildings to stage the show in and are seeking actors aged 12 to 17. “Bradford has such wonderful gothic buildings and architecture, such as Undercliffe Cemetery, Haworth graveyard and City Hall,” says Carl. “Setting the play against the splendour of Bradford’s beautifully-constructed buildings will really bring it to life. It will help youngsters understand the piece and realise that drama doesn’t just take place in stuffy theatres.”
