A drunk party host who hit a police officer five times with a golf club has been locked up for 12 months.

Aidan Earle struck PC Nicholas Birch with such force he broke the club, Bradford Crown Court heard yesterday.

Other officers had to use batons and CS spray to subdue and arrest Earle after they were called to a party in the garage at his home. Earle, 20, of Lower Town Mills, Oxenhope, Keighley, told police he was too drunk to remember the attack.

He pleaded guilty to assaulting PC Birch, causing him actual bodily harm, on May 15.

Prosecutor Claire Larton said Earle was hosting a loud party in the garage of his parents’ house while they were away.

Uniformed officers arrested a man for being drunk and disorderly and then parked nearby to see if there was any further disturbance.

They returned to the property after hearing men shouting.

Earle picked up a golf club from a bundle in the garage, walked up to PC Birch and hit him five times, Miss Larton said.

He struggled with officers, throwing the handle of the broken club at PC Birch. The officer suffered bruising to his shoulders.

Two years ago, Earle was conditionally discharged for 12 months by Bingley Magistrates for assaulting a police officer, the court heard.

Earle’s barrister, Shufqat Khan, said ordinarily his client was a well-behaved, intelligent young man.

The injuries to PC Birch were relatively minor and Earle had stopped binge drinking and sought anger management help.

He had also written to PC Birch to apologise.

Judge John Potter branded Earle’s behaviour “quite disgraceful”.

He sentenced him to 12 months’ detention in a young offender institution.
