A Bradford student is to receive a special award for her dogged determination in an engineering competition.

Amber Thiara, a sixth former at The Girls’ Grammar School, Bradford, has entered projects into the Inspirations contest, organised by North Yorkshire Business and Education Partnership and the Yorkshire Air Museum, since 2005 without winning.

This year, contest organisers the Inspirations Steering Group has decided to present her with an Inspirations Special Award.

In 2005 Amber won the Engineering Inspirations Key Stage 3 Control System Challenge’s Dalek project, and in 2008 she won the Engineering Inspirations Key Stage 4 Resistant Materials Challenge for an ‘easy shopping trolley’.

Last year her Ear Quartet sculpture captured the Out of School Activity prize and went on to win a Bradford Royal Infirmary sculpture design competition for the Cochlear Ear Implant Centre.

David Ham, Amber’s tutor, said: “Amber has always enjoyed Inspirations and seeing what other people have achieved has challenged her to keep entering.”

Yorkshire Air Museum director Ian Reed said: “We are delighted Inspirations has provided a platform to represent the talents of people like Amber to a wider audience.

“Amber is an exemplary role model and we are delighted to be presenting her with this Special Award at Inspirations 2010.”

The event will be held at the museum, at Elvington, near York, on Wednesday from 10am. The Royal Air Force will be supporting the event with a flypast by a Hawker Hurricane from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.
