An Olympian and a world record holder will be among stars to grace an international sports conference in Keighley next week.

Keynote speakers at the Beyond 2012 Excellence for All event will be David Hemery, gold medalist in the 400 metres hurdles at the Mexico Olympics in 1968.

Joining him on the platform will be Filbert Bayi, the former world 1,500 metre record holder.

Along with other top sporting names, including the new England Rugby League coach, Steve McNamara, they will descend on the Keighley Campus of Leeds City College for conference on June 29 and 30.

Other leading lights in the world of sport including former sports ministers, heads of national sports and coaching and training agencies will also take part.

It has been put together by the college, sportKeighley, the Bradford Athletics Network and the National Skills Academy for Sport & Leisure.

The aim is to explore a raft of sporting disciplines including how to inspire sportsmen and women to be prepared for the 2016 Olympics.

It will also focus on careers in sports and coaching.

Giving guidance on developing skills will be Yuri Matischen, Yorkshire champion for sport and regional chairman of the National Skills Academy.

The event will also spread beyond the conference hall to include coaching sessions in Keighley’s Cliffe Castle park.

And it will mark the official opening on the site of the fixed cross-country course set up with the help of Bradford Council.

John Dennis, of sportKeighley, said: “The conference will discuss key themes with an emphasis on sports enterprise, innovation, inspiration and coaching, careers and expertise in coaching and coaching for performance and inspiration.”

The conference will culminate in the 4th Annual sportKeighley Olympic Dinner on Wednesday evening, the final day of the event, at Victoria Hall in Keighley. “A lively evening is in prospect, highlighting the very best in sport that Keighley and district has to offer in terms of developing world class, Olympic, Paralympic and Special Olympic sporting ambitions,” said Mr Dennis.

Conference tickets are £50 for the two days and tickets for the dinner are £25. For further information, log on to www.sportkeighley.com or e-mail John Dennis at sportjohn@blueyonder.co.uk.
