Football fans packed into pubs and bars for England’s crucial match this afternoon with Slovenia as World Cup fever swept the country.
Hundreds of people, many in England shirts, chanted and celebrated as Fabio Capello’s team grabbed a 1-0 win to go through to the next stage.
Lloyd’s bar, in Centenary Square, Bradford, and the Red Lion in Burley-in-Wharfedale, were among the busiest.
Stephen Dunwell, 34, of Shelf, said: “That was fantastic. It’s what we’ve been waiting for since the tournament kicked off.”
Elliot Quinn, 20, of Clayton, Bradford, said: “It’s an excellent result but we should have played it differently.”
Arfan Sheikh, 37, of Wrose, said: “I enjoyed it. It was such a big game and I think we’ll get Germany now.”
Among the fans celebrating at the Red Lion was Terry Uttley of the band Smokie.
