Controversial proposals to extend the opening hours of a shopping complex, GP and veterinary surgery near Bingley have provoked protests from residents.

New plans to change the opening hours of the complex in Swan Avenue, Eldwick, to seven days a week have been put forward.

Under the plans, two shops would be able to open until 11pm each night, sparking concerns from people living nearby they would have “no respite whatsoever” from cars and delivery vans.

Construction of the one-stop-shop centre – the first of its kind in the district – started earlier this year after it was granted planning permission with the condition the whole centre closes at 8.30pm.

A 40-signature petition opposing the extended opening times has now been sent to Bradford Council, along with letters of objection.

The petition reads: “This is a residential area and, as residents of adjacent properties, we believe we have a right to a reasonable amenity and some quality of life in our homes.”

One letter of objection from a grandmother, who lives in Timble Drive, bordering the site, reads: “Noise, smell, street lighting and vehicle lighting after 8.30pm will cause significant disturbance in a residential area when my grandchildren will be asleep.

“The extended opening will increase traffic late at night, with the associated noise and vehicle lights directly behind my house, opposite my bedroom window.”

Councillors granted planning permission for the doctors’ surgery, veterinary practice, a nursery and shops on site, next to Warren Lane, in March last year.

Neither the vets nor the Oak Glen doctors’ surgery run by Dr Sarah Whitfield and Dr Aziz Hafiz has applied for longer opening hours.

Planning officers said part of the car park, near homes, would be closed after 8.30pm.

The application to increase the shops’ opening hours will be heard by members of the Shipley area planning panel tomorrow.

A report to the panel recommends the changes to be approved. The meeting is at Shipley Town Hall from 10am.
