Keighley Rugby Union Club has beaten opposition from 400 other clubs in England to win a pot of money to help improve its ground.

The 90-year-old club at Utley was awarded £5,000 from the Royal Bank of Scotland Rugby Force initiative which aims to encourage members to get involved in volunteer projects at their grounds.

Joining KRUC volunteers in the work was former England international Jason Leonard, one of the judges. He joined 70 members, players and supporters in building a new emergency access.

He said: “I was very impressed with the Keighley set-up and the way their volunteers and members got stuck into a long list of jobs.

“Projects like this can really energise a club if they embrace them with real enthusiasm and that was certainly the case at Keighley.”

Club chairman David Mortimer said: “We were obviously thrilled and delighted to be chosen for one of the major awards because we had a number of important projects that we wanted to get on with.”
