Police have arrested a 64-year-old man in connection with a fire which destroyed an industrial building.

The man has been interviewed by detectives investigating the blaze, which ripped through Robin Fuels in Lawkholme Lane, Keighley, last Friday.

He has been given bail as officers continue to probe the outbreak – the second at the premises within 18 days.

A police spokesman said: “Detectives would still like to speak to anyone who has information or may have witnessed the fire which broke out at about 1.30am on Friday, June 18.”

The one-story building, known as Middleton works, had been used to manufacture and sell biodiesel, until the first fire on June 1.

Then 30 fire crew fought the outbreak which was believed to have started at about midnight.

Later, it was reported by an employee that it would be some months before the factory would be operational again.

Such was the intensity of the second blaze that the building was reduced to rubble. At its height 70 firefighters were at the scene using eight engines and two aerial ladder platforms.

Forty houses were evacuated and some children arrived late at Eastburn primary school. A school spokesman said: “We had some parents call in to say their children got no sleep, so they came in after dinner instead.”

Faisal Yaqoob, 41, who lives in Lawkholme Lane with his family, said: “I woke up when I heard all the noise outside and thought ‘it can’t be the fuel place again’,” he said.

“You’d think there wouldn’t be anything left in there to burn.”

Workers at nearby businesses were unable to get into their own premises and Steve Scott, who owns Yorkshire Stonecraft which is based in the Middleton works, said when he arrived for work he and his employees found their workplace cordoned off.
