A 20-year-old man has admitted killing his nine-year-old brother, but denied murdering him.

Daniel Taylor also denied deliberately wounding his sister, when he appeared for a 15-minute hearing at Bradford Crown Court yesterday.

He was accused of murdering Jack James Taylor on February 18 this year. Taylor, who was dressed in a grey sweat shirt and grey tracksuit bottoms, replied: “Not guilty, but guilty to manslaughter.”

He pleaded not guilty to a second charge of wounding Rachel Taylor with intent on the same date.

Members of his family, including parents Louise and Tim, Rachel and another sister, gazed across at him from the public gallery.

Taylor, who has short-cropped blond hair, was led into the dock by a security officer and looked around the courtroom with his arms folded during the hearing.

Prosecutor Simon Bourne-Arton said it was a sad case.

He said the Crown did not accept the plea “at this stage”.

Mr Bourne-Arton said diminished responsibility was a potential issue and the Crown would need to instruct a psychiatrist.

A provisional date has been fixed for September 13 for a five-day trial.

Mr Bourne-Arton said: “We are all anxious for this case to be heard as soon as possible for very obvious reasons.”

But he said if it did begin on September 13, allowance could be made for the trial to go into a second week. Taylor, of Richardson Avenue, Wibsey, Bradford, is currently in custody at Doncaster, but his lawyer, Abdul Iftikhar, said his client had been accepted for admission at Rampton secure hospital. Mr Iftikhar said further psychiatric assessment was best done in a hospital environment.

Judge James Goss QC listed the case to be mentioned at Leeds on or after July 4.

He said the matter would remain provisionally listed for trial on September 13. Judge Goss told Taylor there was no need for him to be brought to court on that date. He was remanded in custody.
