Teenage designers are celebrating the success of their robot in a battle of machines at Bradford University.

Fighting robot Thornton Thunder, which was created by a team of Thornton Grammar School pupils, outwitted the creations of other school teams from across the district to triumph in the NG Bailey-sponsored Robot Challenge.

The challenge required youngsters to design a fighting robot to battle through four rounds of competition, which included presenting ideas, demonstrating their robot’s manoeuvrability and showdowns against other machines.

The winning team consisted of Tom Vickers, Hamza Mahmood, Bejay Mistry, Kieran Meighan and Luke Crawford. Thornton Thunder was sponsored by Guiseley Mobility.

Their teacher, Chris Jones, said: “We’re really pleased with the effort the boys have put into this project and are confident that this project increases participation in science and engineering.”

Lindsey Johnson, of Education Bradford, supporters of the event, said: “The hard work and commitment of the teams was evidenced in our best ever robots. This event gets bigger and better each time and we are already getting requests about next year.”
