The grandmother of an eight-year-old boy who was stabbed in the leg in the playground of a Bradford primary school has spoken of her family’s shock over the attack.

Anne Wilman had left her grandson at Hill Top Primary School, in Low Moor, shortly before the school day started. Then he was attacked with a penknife.

He was taken to Bradford Royal Infirmary where he received stitches to a gash in his leg.

A 12-year-old boy, who is not a pupil at the school, was arrested on suspicion of assault and later released on police bail.

Mrs Wilman, who looks after her grandson before and after school, said: “When the school rang me I thought he had been in an accident.

“It was when they called me into the office I wondered what had happened.

“I was so shocked, I just didn’t expect it at all. It didn’t hit me for a while.

“Leaving him was a one-off as I had a doctor’s appointment. Normally I do stay with him and I watch him go in.

“I blame myself for dropping him off a couple of minutes early. I can’t blame the school because they didn’t start until ten to nine.

“The headmaster informed the police straightaway when it happened.

“My daughter was really upset. When she got the message at work they wouldn’t let her drive her car. They made her sit down and have a cup of tea.

“I don’t know if it’s really hit him. Sometimes it can affect them later on.”

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said a 12-year-old boy arrested on suspicion of assault remained on bail pending further inquiries into the attack which occurred shortly before 9am on Wednesday, May 26.

No-one at Hill Top Primary School was available to comment.
