Bradford Refugee Week, running until Sunday, celebrates the contributions refugees make, highlights their experiences and encourages a better understanding between communities.
The programme of events began last weekend with a Sanctuary Tent at the Mela, featuring live music from refugee musicians, dance, art and stalls.
The week is organised by a team including Bradford Action for Refugees, Bradford Immigration and Asylum Support and Advice Network, Bradford Refugee Forum and the Beacon Trust, which helps asylum seekers and refugees find accommodation.
Refugees taking part are mainly from Africa and the Middle East, from countries such as Zimbabwe, Iran, Iraq, Burma, Afghanistan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
“Bradford has a proud tradition of welcoming people from across the world, particularly those who have fled persecution because of their beliefs, race or religion,” says Will Sutcliffe, from Beacon. “Refugee Week sees a coming together of refugee and asylum-seeker communities and those working among them.”
The Refugee Communities World Cup includes a youth tournament at Manningham Sports Centre and an adult tournament at Hanson School on Saturday from 10am to 6pm. “We’re tapping into the World Cup spirit,” says Will. “Refugee Week highlights injustice and tragedy, but we’re also focusing on getting people together socially. One of the key aims is for it to be fun.”
