Families with Down’s Syndrome children can enjoy a year of free swimming lessons at Bingley Baths, thanks to a legacy left by Bradford’s last chimney sweep.
After winning the pools in 1973, Hughie Sunter left his winnings to be used by charities working with people who have learning disabilities.
He called it Pam’s Legacy, after his daughter Pamela, who had Down’s Syndrome, and The Down Syndrome Training and Support Service has been given £888 from it.
The money has come to the service via the Yorkshire Building Society Charitable Foundation, and now the free swimming sessions mean whole families will be able to enjoy themselves and the children will get a chance to build self-confidence, exercise and develop communication skills.
Wendy Uttley, of the Down Syndrome Training and Support Service, said: “Children get a real joy out of their time in the water and it’s vital that their parents and siblings can be there to enjoy that time with them.”
Adrian Horsley, of the Charitable Foundation, said: “This is a fantastic cause which does so much for those with Down’s Syndrome in Bradford and their families. We hope that our donation will bring lots of swimming fun to lots of families in Bradford.”
