It was a hero’s homecoming for Bingley motorcycle champ Ian Hutchinson after he became the first rider to win five races in a week at the Isle of Man TT.

Friends of “Hutchy” welcomed the 30-year-old home to his local, The Acorn in Eldwick yesterday following his feat.

They unfurled a banner outside the pub and cracked open the Champagne to celebrate his five-race victories – the last being by 37 seconds over his nearest rival.

Speaking from the pub while surrounded by friends, Mr Hutchinson said: “It’s good to be back and great to have a group of mates who are so supportive of what I do. It has been quite emotional to see all the messages of support on my website.”

The Padgetts Honda rider, who now lives in Guiseley, secured his place in the record books by his victory in a shortened Senior TT in the Isle of Man, which ended on Friday.

He had been involved in a tight battle with John McGuinness and Conor Cummins before they retired and crashed out, allowing him to eventually triumph over Ryan Farquhar and Bruce Anstey.

He beat the record of 11-times champion Phillip McCallen who was previously the only man in the races 103-year history to win four races in a week.

Matt Dobbins, 33, who has ridden with Mr Hutchinson since he was 17, joined the welcome home party yesterday. Mr Dobbins, of Bingley, said: “It is an unbelievable achievement and will probably be unbeatable for many years.

“Going and winning two or three races is very impressive but winning them all is just ridiculously good.”

Fellow motorbiker Craig Atkinson, 35, flew out to the Isle of Man twice to watch his friend compete – and won £450 betting on him.

“I usually race but it was the first year not competing,” he said.

“I’m usually half a mile behind, up a mountain top, so it was great to see him crossing the finishing line.”

John Burnet, licensee of The Acorn, said: “To win five out of five for the first time in the races history of 103 years or more – and smashing all the records – is just brilliant.”

Mr Hutchinson will next head to Belfast for the Ulster Grand Prix in August.

It has been a happy hunting ground in the past, with him having triumphed in the road race over the last three years.
