A special event is taking place next week inviting people to become involved in an arts scheme connected to Bradford’s £24.4 million City Park project.

The Arts of Place programme includes a number of temporary artist commissions, events and learning opportunities in the city.

It has been designed to help raise the cultural profile of the six-acre park which is currently under construction in the heart of the city.

On Wednesday there will be a free arts event inviting anyone who lives or works in the city and is interested in regeneration, creativity or education to attend to explore how regeneration and arts professionals can work together.

Four Bradford-based artists – Lucy Bergman, Shanaz Gulzar and Steve Manthorp, part of a project called ADEPT, and Simon Warner – have been appointed to undertake temporary public art commissions. And two West Yorkshire-based artists – Larna Campbell and Jack Lockhart – are to undertake professional mentoring placements. The Arts of Place is a partnership between Bradford Council, creative company Beam and Arts Council England, Yorkshire – Grants for the Arts.

Councillor David Green, the Council’s executive member for regeneration and economy, said: “The City Park is not only a major regeneration project; it’s also a great opportunity to engage people from all areas with the city. Alongside the Arts of Place programme, Bradford Council is working with several artists and groups to make sure that public art is a key part of the space.

‘‘We are also working on numerous education projects to again engage residents in their new city centre.”

Robert Powell, executive director of Beam, said: “We are delighted to have this opportunity to bring this programme to Bradford, thanks to the Council’s imaginative ambitions for regeneration and culture.”

The event takes place at Kala Sangam, St Peter’s House, Forster Square, Bradford, from 9.30am to 4.30pm. To book a place e-mail cathy@beam.uk.net or call (01924) 215550.
