A wealth of events took place over the weekend across the district as thousands got out to enjoy the Bank Holiday.

National Chief Scout Bear Grylls touched down to see Scouts at the Blackhills Scout Campsite in Cottingley yesterday. He gave a master class in firelighting and cooking at the campsite to 500 Scouts after arriving by helicopter.

He said: “My goal as Chief Scout is for every young person that wants to be involved in Scouting to be able to take part. But in order to make this happen we need even more adult volunteers to keep up with the demand.”

A Funday Sunday was held in Lister Park, Bradford in aid of the Elizabeth Foundation, a Bradford school for deaf and hearing- impaired children.

Entertainment was provided by Guiseley Brass Band, bouncy castles, Punch and Judy and magic shows.

Ilkley’s famous lido celebrated its 75th anniversary over the weekend with a free family fun day on Saturday. Andrew Burns, Bradford Council’s business development manager, said: “Obviously it was a bit of a shame about the weather. Ilkley Lido is a fantastic facility and we are expecting some great weather this summer so hopefully we will get lots of people coming along.”

Living history group the Red Wyvern Society re-enacted life during the War of The Roses in 1456 at Skipton Castle throughout the weekend.

The event, which continues today, included demonstrations of everyday life, arms and armour, including swords and polearms, archery, the ‘knight school’ and cooking.
