The Miserable Rich – Of Flight And Fury (Humble Soul) ***** After the success of their previous album Twelve Ways To Count, The Miserable Rich have released a stunning follow-up that showcases their wealth of musical talent. The combination of pianos, cellos, violins, stirring lyrics and passionate vocals culminate in 13 immensely emotive tracks. No matter what mood the songs err towards, they manage to fit seamlessly together while giving each track its own independent tone. One need only compare the chirpy Somerhill, the graceful Manor Farm and the dark The Mouth Of The Wolf to see this. While not for everyone, it will be pure gold for some.

Castrovalva – We Are A Unit (Brew) * Despite the one-star rating that I have given this album, I would definitely buy it if I were a pub landlord who was having difficulty getting the customers to drink up and go home at closing time. I cannot imagine any form of music (and I use the term loosely) that would encourage me to leave a pub quicker than if this was played on the jukebox! Castrovalva are a trio from Leeds who I am sure mean well, and probably satisfy the needs of a few punters who gain pleasure from listening to extremely loud noise. The PR notes that I was supplied with for this review suggest that this CD is harsh bass-driven rock with various pop overtones! Harsh? Yes. Bass? Definitely. Pop? Well, don’t believe everything you read!

Judy Garland – Over The Rainbow (Decca) *** The album showcases many of Garland’s finest songs, and reminds us what a wonderful voice she had. With the recent TV quest to find a new Dorothy, there has been increased interest in Judy Garland, and those discovering her for the first time will not be disappointed. Those old enough to remember her the first time round are in for a cosy nostalgic treat. Dream of days gone by with such classics as Swanee, When You Wore A Tulip, I’m Always Chasing Rainbows and, of course, Over The Rainbow. Judy Garland remains a superstar.
