Join Team Macmillan and stride out for charity along a 5½-mile circular walk starting at Bracken Hall Countryside Museum at Shipley Glen on Sunday. This family event gains another outing in 2010, with the aim of getting people to enjoy the natural beauty of the area while raising much-needed funds for people living with cancer. The walk starts and finishes at Shipley Glen, and takes in some beautiful views of the Baildon countryside. The walk starts at 10am and the registration fee is £5.

The historical rhododendrons at Harlow Carr in Harrogate are definitely something not to be missed when they are in full bloom, and over this weekend there will be specialist walks, displays and opportunities to meet the experts to answer all your gardening questions. Huddersfield Plant Sale offers a good chance to stock up on a huge range of plants at great prices. Many stallholders bring unusual varieties, so this is also an excellent opportunity to talk directly to the growers and get some great gardening tips. The plant sale, in New Street, runs from 9am to 4pm next Saturday.

Enjoy the fields of bluebells next Saturday at Hardcastle Crags and take part in a three-mile walk following the riverside path to Gibson Mill. There will be time for drinks and a rest at Gibson Mill before returning along the main track. Booking from Hardcastle Crags Estate Office, Hollin Hall, Crimsworth Dean, Hebden Bridge is essential.

There’s a charity craft fair for Brain Tumour UK next Saturday at the White Hart Hotel in Cold Bath Road, Harrogate. Entry is free, and there will be a wide variety of arts and crafts for you to browse and buy, such as jewellery, hats, handbags, scarves, painting and photography. The fair is open from 10am to 4pm.

This is definitely the month for all things horticultural, with yet another garden show at Lotherton Hall, Aberford, Leeds, from next Friday to Sunday. The show is on from 10am to 5pm with not only horticultural displays, but ferret racing, a reptile house, meerkats, alpacas and donkey rides. On Saturday and Sunday, there will also be shire horse and sheepdog displays and duck herding.
