An intrepid Bradford father-and-daughter team are preparing to trek across the spectacular desert landscapes of Jordan to raise money for Marie Curie.

Dawn Dowson, 36, of Queensbury, will join her dad Ronald Hiley, 62, of Clayton, for the Tri-Jordan event, which will see participants choosing to either trek on foot, cycle or take to horseback to cover the desert route over five days on the eight-day trip.

The pair, who will trek the route on foot, fly out to take part in the challenge on October 30, but first they must rise to the challenge of raising a minimum of £5,000 sponsorship between them by August.

Mr Hiley, a bus driver with First, is no stranger to raising money for Marie Curie, having taken part in a number of challenges over the years after being inspired by Marie Curie fundraising manager Brenda Doyle.

He has raised more than £15,000 over the last five years.

Mr Hiley, said: “The Sahara was quite tough and I didn’t think I would do another desert trek, but when Dawn mentioned she was keen on doing this one, I thought I would support her.”

Dawn, a hairdresser and mum to seven-year-old Joshua, lost her best friend Lisa Farley three years ago. Lisa was 33 when she died from leukaemia and left a son, Luke.

Then just months later neighbour Pauline Isher-wood also died from cancer. She received care from nurses based at Bradford’s Marie Curie Hospice.

“That is my inspiration,” said Dawn.
