A total of 132 candidates will be contesting the 30 seats available this year on Bradford Council.

The ruling Conservatives, along with Labour, are both defending 13 seats, the Liberal Democrats two, the Green Party one and the British National Party one. The political make-up of the Council stands at both Labour and the Conserv-atives with 36 councillors, the Liberal Democrats with 13, the Greens on three and the BNP two.

The Tories, Labour and Liberal Democrats are contesting every seat. There are 12 Green candidates, ten for the BNP, nine standing for the UK Independence Party, four for the Respect party, and three Democratic Nationalists, as well as four independent candidates.

Key figures fighting for their seats on May 6 include Councillor Mohammad Masood, who sits on the executive, who is hoping to retain his seat in Heaton for the Conservatives; the Deputy Lord Mayor, Councillor Naveeda Ikram, who is standing again for Labour in Little Horton; and Councillor Imran Hussain, the Labour group’s deputy leader, who is contesting his seat in Toller ward.

Six councillors are standing down, including Labour stalwart Tony Cairns, who has represented Tong for 18 years. He has served as leader of the Council and was Lord Mayor during Bradford’s centenary year. Liberal Democrat deputy group leader David Ward is not contesting his seat as he is running a campaign to be the MP for Bradford East. Coun Ward, who represents Idle and Thackley, has been on the Council for more than 25 years.

The count will begin in the afternoon of Friday, May 7, due to the General Election overnight count on Thursday, so the first results are not expected back until later on Friday afternoon.

The deadline to apply to be included on the district’s register of electors is 5pm on Tuesday, April 20, also the last day for requests for a new postal vote or to change or cancel an existing postal or proxy vote.

New applications to vote by proxy must be received by 5pm on Tuesday, April 27.
