Young celebrity magician Dynamo returned to his childhood streets to be filmed for a new TV show.

Twenty-year-old Steven Frayne, better known as Dynamo, has just finished making Dynamo's Estate of Mind for Channel 4, which was partly filmed near his home on Bradford's Delph Hill estate.

In the past the youngster has wowed celebrities such as Will Smith, Gwyneth Paltrow and world-famous magician David Blaine who coined the nickname Dynamo after seeing Steven's performance.

But home is where the heart is for the young magician, who despite living a life of international travel and entertaining celebrity fans, still stays with his grandparents when he comes home.

In fact Dynamo is so devoted to Bradford that he said he would not have taken part in filming for the programme, which is due to be aired on a date to be set in May, if some scenes had not been shot in the city.

And as a result the show features illusions and magic performed on his home estate and in Wibsey and Wyke.

"We got in all the kebab shops and takeaways, everything that makes Bradford what it is," he joked.

He said a particularly memorable performance had taken place in a centre catering for youngsters who had been excluded from school.

Dynamo was faced with a jostling crowd of cynical teens.

But on performing just a few of his tricks he said the crowd were stunned into silence.

"They went well quiet!" he said.

And if making his first programme surrounded by the people and places he knows best wasn't enough to prove his devotion to his home, Dynamo's dreams are.

"If I ever buy a house it's going to be in Bradford.

"I want to look after my friends and family," he said.

He said whether putting on a show for an A-list celebrity, or a roomful of Bradford school children, the beauty of his magic was the disbelief and wonder it created in the audience.

"It breaks down the barriers, it brings people together and it gives people a chance to see celebrities behaving normally, like the man in the street," he said.

But despite his humble attitude Dynamo said his career, which involved travelling and meeting people, had inevitably led him to make some celebrity friends.

He said a trip to New York had been instigated by Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn, whose band will be playing at the famous Apollo Theatre for five nights from Sunday.

Albarn is said to be such a fan of the former Wyke Manor pupil's magic that he invited Dynamo to appear at the Apollo.

The young magician said he will work the crowd with his magical abilities during the nightly shows, which were sold out almost as soon as tickets went on sale.

And during his stay in the Big Apple the youngster might fulfil another of his ambitions, to film his first DVD, provisionally titled Ten Days in New York.

The New York trip is just part of a busy year in which Dynamo has divided his time between Barcelona, London, San Francisco and, of course, Bradford.

But wherever in the world he is performing, and to whichever famous stars, Dynamo always remembers his Bradford roots.

"Bradford is home," he said.
