Two brothers who have suffered repeated vandalism to their land are convinced that someone has a vendetta against them.

Jack and Gary Bennett have owned the land, at Castle Mills, Becks Road, Keighley, for six years and in the last three weeks problems with vandalism and damage to on-site vehicles have got out of control.

The pair own and run South Street Metals, in Keighley, and the extra land is used as a temporary base for cranes waiting to be fixed and by a family friend, who lives on the land in his caravan.

Jack said: "We have had nothing but trouble with this land and we are fed up.

"First of all it was damage to the machinery, then three weeks ago some cars got smashed up and now the caravan and cranes have been wrecked.

"This has just been horrible and it is costing us money. We want it to stop and if people have any grievances with us we want to know what we are doing wrong.

"We want to make people aware of what is going on, so they might be able to help us work out what is going on.

"It is awful when you can't fathom out what is happening," he said.

On February 24 five cars a family friend had on the land were burnt out.

Then on March 16, at around 10.30pm, machinery on the land was found smashed up and the caravan had been broken into, items including a generator were stolen and windows smashed.

Jack said the trouble had picked up a few weeks ago but had started almost two years ago, with machines being sporadically smashed up and a previous family friend's caravan burnt out.

The two brothers started using the land over two years ago and have been working with Bradford Council to find ways of tidying up the land with a view to selling the site. Jack said: "All we want to do is get the land away from being a scrap metal yard and do something different with it.

"It could be a nice bit of land and we are doing our best to improve it.

"We have had no problems with the neighbours and many people tell us we are doing a nice job."

Jack said that the police had been involved from the start but had not yet found the culprits.

Insp Mark Allsop, from the neighbourhood policing team in Keighley, said that the two different incidents in February and March had been assigned officers from the patrol team.

He added that the incident involving the caravan was still under investigation.

Insp Allsop said: "If we do get reports of damage given to us someone would follow it up. Even if there were no leads, we would do inquiries.

"If it is youth nuisance it can be a case of officers being in the right place at the right time.

"If anyone is having a lot of problems we would make sure that we have extra patrols." He added: "Even if an incident is not repeated and there are no witnesses, we are getting police community support officers to do house-to-house inquiries, giving a good quality of service."
