ANOTHER leg-stretching charity event has been organised by Skipton Rotary Club - but it could be the last if uptake does not improve on last year.

The 2005 Craven Community Walk - or rather two walks of five and 10 miles - was the brainchild of the Rotarians to give local charity groups and organisations the chance to raise money for their own causes in a multi-group effort.

Last May just a few hundred people took part, while the ceiling for entrants is as high as 1,000.

This year's walk takes place on Sunday May 7 and begins and ends at Skipton Auction Mart at staggered intervals from 10am to 6pm.

All the preparation work is carried out by Skipton Rotary.

It provides route maps for the five and 10-mile hikes, arranges for the provision of first aiders and route marshals along the way, produces master copies of registration forms, sponsor forms and walk information, and ensures there is adequate car parking and other facilities.

All the charities need to do is organise their own sponsorship and keep the proceeds for their own causes.

"It's really a make or break situation this year," said Skipton Rotarian Peter Warburton.

"The event has been on our website for three months and while there have been lots of 'hits' we have had very few organisations registering.

"Groups have until April 20 to do so, so we may have a flood at the last minute.

"If not, and it turns out to be a flop, we will probably not do another, although we would ideally like it to be an annual fundraising event," he said.

Any group interested in taking part is asked to register as soon as possible to allow the club to organise the day efficiently.

The routes mapped out will not be suitable for buggies and wheelchairs, although dog owners can take their pets as long as they are on a lead.

Details of the walk can be obtained from Skipton Rotary at 4-6 High Street, Skipton BD23 1JZ; at www.skipton-rotary.org.uk or by email on charitywalk2006@aol.com
