Dietician Lucy Taylor is striding out to help people living with cancer in Bradford.

The 29-year-old, who works at St Luke's Hospital, is one of only three specialist MacMillan dieticians in Yorkshire.

Lucy's friends and family will sponsor her on the T&A-backed 5.5 mile Shipley Stride from Shipley Glen and back to bring in cash for Macmillan Cancer Relief.

She walked the walk the first time last year, bringing in £200, and hopes to beat that on Sunday, May 21.

As part of the head and neck cancer team she helps people who have problems eating and drinking and getting enough calories to fight off the disease.

Last year more than 120 people were newly diagnosed with head and neck cancers in the Bradford area and many of them need Lucy's help.

Before becoming a Macmillan healthcare specialist a year ago, Lucy, who graduated in dietetics from Edinburgh University, was a Bradford NHS Trust dietician.

She said: "There is no better job for me. Every day I can see the difference we make in helping people living with cancer.

"The Shipley Stride is great fun and without events like this Macmillan specialists like me would not be working in the area. By taking part, people will be helping Macmillan make a real difference too."

Macmillan fundraising manager at Bradford Emma Lavelle-Wood said: "We are extremely lucky to have a Macmillan specialist such as Lucy providing expert nutritional care and advice which will help people through their cancer journey.

"Lucy is proud to take part in this year's Shipley Stride and we are hoping as many people as possible will come and join her."

Last year's Shipley Stride raised more than £20,000 and organisers are hoping for more.

This year, the proceeds will go towards specialist nurse training and Macmillan grants for cancer patients, which can pay for anything from heating bills, hospital parking fees, new clothes for patients who have lost or gained weight, or for much needed breaks.
